The Afghan Hound is a very old sighthound, a hound that primarily hunts by speed and sight. The Afghan Hound is one of the most ancient dog breeds, dating back for many thousands of years. Distinguished by its thick, fine, silky coat and its tail with a ring curl at the end, the breed acquired its unique features in the cold mountains of Afghanistan.
Each dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar appearance and/or behavioural characteristics. They come from selected ancestors who had these same special characteristics. Dogs have been selectively bred by Man for certain characteristics for thousands of years. Initially these selections centred on domestication and useful behaviour such as hunting or retrieving ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive appearance. This has resulted in the present day a great variety of types of dog breed.
