The Basset Hound breed are scent-hounds, bred to hunt by scent. Their tracking sense by smell is second only to that of the Bloodhound. Basset Hounds are a descendant of the St. Hubert's Hound, a dog similar to the present-day Bloodhound. Friars of St. Hubert's Abbey in medieval France desired a shorter-legged dog, capable of following a scent under brush in thick forests during hunting sports. Bassets were originally used to trail rabbits and hare. The earliest reference of the word "Basset" to a breed of dog can be found in a woodcut illustrated manual on hunting, Jacques de Fouilloux's La Vénerie (hunting), written around 1560.
More recently Basset Hounds have had prominent roles in popular culture, comic strips, films and television shows such as The Dukes of Hazzard and Columbo and famously as the logo for the Hush Puppies brand of shoes and being sung to by Elvis Presley as "Hound Dog".
