The Bearded Collie or Beardie was used by Scottish shepherds in the Scottish Highlands to herd both sheep and cattle. It was bred in the early 16th century from Polish Lowland sheepdogs and local Scottish dogs. The Bearded Collie was essentially used as a working dog as it was found to be hardy and reliable, being able to stand up to harsh conditions, and the toughest sheep. These days it is known mainly as a lively companion dog for the family often prone to bark for any reason!

Each dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar appearance and/or behavioural characteristics. They come from selected ancestors who had these same special characteristics. Dogs have been selectively bred by Man for certain characteristics for thousands of years. Initially these selections centred on domestication and useful behaviour such as hunting or retrieving ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive appearance. This has resulted in the present day a great variety of types of dog breed.
