A Bichon Frisé or Bichon Frise, is a small breed of white dog with a generally happy disposition which make for popular pets. The Bichon Frisé descended from the Barbet or Water Spaniel Poodle, and a generally white, small "lap" or ladies dog, which existed in the Mediterranean area as far back as 600-300 B.C. from which came the name "Barbichon", later shortened to "Bichon". The Bichon went to sea as a working Spanish boat dog. They were ideal for a boat because they do not shed their fur, only require limited exercise, are fine companions, as well as being obedient and easy to train. Though not considered a retriever or water dog, the Bichon, due to it's ancestry, has a happy affinity for water and retrieving. On the Spanish boats however, the Bichon Frisé's job was to make people welcome and happy with their hosts.

Each dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar appearance and/or behavioural characteristics. They come from selected ancestors who had these same special characteristics. Dogs have been selectively bred by Man for certain characteristics for thousands of years. Initially these selections centred on domestication and useful behaviour such as hunting or retrieving ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive appearance. This has resulted in the present day a great variety of types of dog breed.
