The Border Collie is a medium-sized, hardworking breed of herding dog, usually black and white double coated, that originated in the border country of England and Scotland. They are generally regarded as the most intelligent of all dog breeds. Border Collies are highly energetic and require plenty of exercise being at their happiest with a job to do. They are still frequently used on farms all over the world for working with livestock, and they have also become popular as pet and sport dogs. The Border Collie is descended from droving and gathering breeds originating on the Scottish and English border. Mention of the 'Collie' or 'Colley' type first appeared toward the end of the nineteenth century with every current Border Collie tracing back to a dog known as Old Hemp.

Each dog breed is a group of dogs that have very similar appearance and/or behavioural characteristics. They come from selected ancestors who had these same special characteristics. Dogs have been selectively bred by Man for certain characteristics for thousands of years. Initially these selections centred on domestication and useful behaviour such as hunting or retrieving ability. Later, dogs were also selected for attractive and distinctive appearance. This has resulted in the present day a great variety of types of dog breed.
