The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a breed of hunting dog that was developed along the Chesapeake Bay in the 1800s. Its ancestors are thought to include the Newfoundland, Bloodhound, English Foxhound, Otter hound and the Irish Water Spaniel. It hunts under adverse weather and water conditions, often having to break the ice apart with its large and powerful chest when diving into ice-layered water while duck hunting. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has clear yellowish/amber eyes. The hindquarters are at least as high as the shoulders, and thye havea double "oily-waterproof"coat that usually waves on the shoulders, neck, back and loins. The round broad head has small hanging ears, a medium stop and muzzlewith thin lips. The hindquarters are particularly strong and the toes are webbed which aids their excellent swimming ability. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is intelligent, affectionate and protective of its owners and property.
